Frequently Asked Questions

What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression has an 86% success rate for pain reduction associated with herniated or bulging discs.... even after failed surgery. It is a non-surgical, traction based therapy for the relief of back, neck and radiating nerve pain. During the procedure, by cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it, thus reducing the intra-discal pressure that leads to bulging, herniated and degenerative discs.

It is different from traditional traction in a number of ways, but importantly research has shown that it can reduce the pressure in discs up to negative 150psi, where as traction has been shown to only gets into the positive 75 psi range. This incredible change in pressure partly accounts for the positive changes observed in post MRI's. In addition, NSSD gently stimulates the proprioceptive input to the spinal cord further inhibiting and reducing pain. It is a very gentle procedure that improves vertebral motor unit functioning and imbibition of the involved discs.

How does the vacuum affect an injured disc?

During Spinal Decompression therapy, a negative pressure is created within the disc, because of that negative pressure, disc material can be pulled back within the normal confines of the disc and allow healing to occur.

Why did we choose the Triton DTS Spinal Decompression System?

After a year of research, South Coast Chiropractic chose the Triton DTS system manufactured by the Chattanooga group. The Chattanooga group is the premier manufacturer of physical medicine equipment and offers the state of the art Computerized Head Unit. This is considered the most technologically advanced unit offered today. In fact, in 2006 the system won an esteemed Australian Design Award in the "Medical and Scientific" Category. It is also the system that the University of Texas purchased for treatment of its world class athletes.

How is Spinal Decompression different from regular Traction?

The award winning Triton computer is the key. It controls the variations in the traction pull allowing for spinal decompression and eliminating muscle guarding that is typical in conventional traction devices. The pre programmed treatment protocols ramp up and down the amount of axial traction which allows for higher levels of decompression and rehydration. Again, research has shown that it can reduce the pressure in discs up to negative 150psi, where as traction has been shown to only gets into the positive 75 psi range. This incredible change in pressure partly accounts for the positive changes observed in post MRI's.

Who Can Benefit from Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Anyone who has back or neck pain caused in whole or part by a damaged disc may be helped. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or radiculopathy (pinched nerves).

RUPTURED DISCS, SPINAL STENOSIS, SCIATICA, FACET SYNDROME, FAILED SURGERY

Are there medical studies that document the effectiveness of Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Yes, there are many studies that document it's effectiveness.

Documented studys of before and after MRI's, show up to 90% reduction of disc herniations in 10 of 14 cases and other studies show that the majority of ruptured disc patients achieved good to excellent results after their decompression therapy.

Interesting Note

February 2007 issue of "To Your Health" magazine, article written by Dr. James Edwards. In the article, Dr. Edwards discusses the safety and effectiveness of this non surgical treatment for Spinal Disc herniations.

Are there conditions where Spinal Decompression Therapy is not recommended?

Spinal Decompression is not recommended for pregnant women, patients who have osteoporosis, severe obesity, or severe nerve damage. Spinal surgery with instrumentation (screws, metal plates or cages) is also contraindicated. However, decompression therapy after a bone fusion or non fusion surgery can be performed.

Will Spinal Decompression Therapy hurt?

In almost all cases, the treatments are completely painless. In fact, some patients fall asleep during their sessions. Dr. Scott will ensure your comfort by proper positioning on the table and will check back with you frequently during your treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

The specific treatment plan will be determined by Dr. Scott after a thorough examination. Based on research and current clinical experience, the best results have been achieved with 20 treatments over a 6 week period.
