Decompression Therapy Effective Alternative to Back SurgeryBy Edave (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to back surgery that is revolutionizing back pain management, says chiropractor Dr. Craig Andresen.  Dr. Andresen is raising awareness about the benefits of decompression therapy in an effort to educate patients about effective alternatives to surgery and medication. According to Dr. Andresen, decompression therapy is successful because it naturally tractions the spine, creating space between the vertebra and relieving pressure on the nerves. Dr. Andresen says this treatment provides long-lasting pain relief for patients with a herniated or slipped disc.

Elgin area chiropractor Dr. Craig Andresen announced that his practice, Andresen Active Healthcare, has had significant success relieving back and neck pain in patients by using spinal decompression therapy.

"Decompression therapy is an effective, drug-free treatment for low back and neck pain associated with a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and other spine problems," said Dr. Andresen.  "This treatment is effective because rather than relying on medication to 'mask' pain symptoms, we treat the underlying mechanical problem that is causing pain in the first place."

While medication can temporarily relieve back pain, drugs are not a long-term solution, says Dr. Andresen. Back surgery can also be risky and may even lead to greater pain problems, cautions the chiropractor. Decompression therapy, in contrast, is non-invasive and no medication is necessary for treatment.

According to Dr. Andresen, professional athletes have used spinal decompression therapy for over a decade to treat back pain and other problems resulting from sports injuries. Now, Dr. Andresen is bringing this treatment to Elgin area patients.

"Back pain associated with a lumbar slipped disc, a herniated disc, and other spinal problems can be very difficult to treat," said Dr. Andresen. "However, thanks to decompression therapy, our clinic has been able to help hundreds of back pain patients successfully manage their pain. We are excited to offer patients access to this treatment, especially individuals who are searching for alternatives to back surgery."

A herniated disc causes pain when the disc slips out of proper alignment and compresses nearby nerves. Individuals may experience this nerve compression as a numbing, radiating or shooting pain sensation. Spinal decompression treatments work by relieving pressure on the lumbar and cervical spine, says Dr. Andresen. Through natural traction, these treatments create space between compressed vertebrae.

"Our Elgin office for chiropractic care is one of the only local practices to offer this revolutionary treatment," said Dr. Andresen. "We are educating patients about the treatment's benefits, especially as an effective alternative to medication and surgery."

Dr. Andresen says individuals who have experienced back pain for six months or longer may be good candidates for treatment.

In addition to decompression therapy, Andresen Active Healthcare provides chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and massage therapy for drug-free pain relief.
