follows the path of your nerve down the back of your legs and thighs, ankle, foot and toes, but it can also radiate to your back. Along with burning, sharp pains, you may also feel nerve sensations such as pins-and-needles, tingling, prickling, crawling sensations, or tenderness. Ironically, your leg may also feel numb.

To complicate matters, although sciatica pain is usually in the back of the legs or thighs, in some people it can be in the front or the side of the legs, or even in the hips. For some, the pain is in both legs - bilateral sciatica!

Coughing, sneezing or other kinds of movements commonly intensify the pain. Believe it or not, many patients report that minor tasks such as leaning forward to brush their teeth can increase the pain. The types of pain that you experience may vary. There may be constant throbbing, but then it may let up for hours or even days. It may ache or be knife-like. Sometimes postural changes, like lying down or changing positions, affect the pain, and sometimes they don't. In severe cases, sciatica can cause a loss of reflexes or even a wasting of your calf muscles.

For sciatica sufferers, a good night's sleep may be a thing of the past. Many sufferers spend all night tossing and turning with the lack of success in finding a comfortable position. Simple things like walking, sitting, or standing up can be difficult or impossible.

We take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of sciatica. After a thorough neurological examination we determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly. We want to determine if the cause of your sciatica is a traditional chiropractic problem where misalignments of your spinal bones result in pressure on your nerves. There can also be a disc component, whereas you are suffering from a disc herniation or bulge which crushes down on the nerves of the spine or even leads to spinal cord impression. The third component would be the muscular component. A large portion of the population has the sciatic nerve piercing through the piriformis musculature. A chronic spasm and tightness would result in pressure on the nerve. In most cases, the cause of the sciatica is actually a combination of the three causes listed above.

No matter what the condition, it is imperative that the doctor performs a thorough and comprehensive exam to determine the exact nature of the patient's condition.

How do you get sciatica?

It's easy to trace some spinal problems to a specific event, such as a car accident. However, sciatica is usually the result of damage accumulated over time and repetition. How you sleep, what you do for work and recreation are all things that can lead to damage to the spine. Our office sees amazing results with sciatica sufferers!
