Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression Therapy in Sugar Land TX for Disc-Related Health Issues

Spinal Decompression Therapy graphic for Sugar Land PatientThe human spine is a remarkably efficient machine, but the stress it must take on a daily basis leaves it vulnerable to injuries and degenerative conditions. The joints that give the spine its flexibility and the cartilage-filled discs that lie between vertebrae are subject to wear, tear and trauma, and the resulting spinal compression can create a variety of debilitating issues. For many of our patients here at Total Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Sugar Land, the answer lies not in invasive major surgery but in a natural form of treatment known as spinal decompression therapy. This gentle yet effective method restores disc alignment, encourages swifter healing, provides natural pain management, and serves as a useful wellness care technique for people with chronic spinal conditions.

A variety of triggers can cause the spinal column to become compressed. Bulging or herniated discs are a common problem for accident victims or people with an undetected spinal misalignment. Part of the disc may slip out of its normal position, or some of the inner cartilage may protrude from the disc. In either case, the major nerve branches near the damaged disc may be impinged, causing pain, loss of sensation, weakness and other alarming symptoms. Discs can also flatten out as they lose some of their water content over time, resulting in age-related disc compression. The facet joints that hold the vertebrae together may degenerate, allowing the spine to lose height.

Spine Decompression therapy allows us to treat these and other forms of spinal compression in our Sugar Land patients. A mechanized table holds the patient comfortably in place while chiropractor, Dr. Yvette Nadeau, uses digital controls to apply a small amount of controlled distraction (outward pulling motion) on the spinal column. This distraction creates a negative pressure that sucks the discs back into place into gives them room to heal. Multiple sessions are required for maximum healing and pain management.

Spinal Decompression Provides Natural Complement to Manual Chiropractic Adjustment

Spinal decompression therapy in Sugar Land addresses many of the same symptoms typically resolved through traditional manual chiropractic adjustment, such as sciatica or other nerve impingements that cause pain, numbness and muscle atrophy. But while traditional chiropractic adjustments can be helpful in treating a wide range of underlying musculoskeletal misalignment, decompression is prescribed specifically for conditions involving disc compression, dislocation or herniation.

Some patients may in fact benefit from both forms of care, especially if they have been involved in a traumatic event such as an auto accident. We may also prescribe supportive therapies such as ice/heat therapy or corrective exercises to relief muscle tension, relieve soft tissue pain and strengthen the spinal musculature. Patients suffering from a chronic form of spinal compression may benefit from adding periodic decompression therapy to their regular wellness care routine. We encourage anyone in the Sugar Land area seeking relief from a spinal problem to contact our office to learn more about spinal decompression therapy and schedule a Free consultation.
