Today we are going to talk about a very important topic: Solutions to Lose Belly Fat

RC: Hello Dr. Phinney, how are you today?

Dr. Matthew Phinney: I’m doing fantastic, thanks for asking.

RC: Great.Well thanks for joining us.

Question 1: Why is nutrition important?

RC: So first question: Why is nutrition important?

Dr. Matthew Phinney: Awesome question and I’m excited to be here on this interview. Nutrition is important now more so than ever before really because our food supply over the last fifty years has changed dramatically. We’re now growing crops in nutritionally or nutrient depleted soil. Factory farming has really taken over the landscape. And you know fifty years ago, food was food. Now, we’re labeling things that are organic. Well fifty years ago, everything was organic.

So the food industry is in the business of making money. That’s why they’re there. They’re a for-profit and there’s really two ways they can make more money. They can either increase their prices or they can sell more food. So they’ve done a fantastic job at selling more food and putting different things in products to have us eat more and make us want more and make us crave more. And you can see that with the stats. If you look at how we’ve done even over the last say thirty years, we’re bigger than we’ve ever been. We’re bigger than any other time we’ve ever been in history. So now, it’s more important than ever to really get into the labels and really know what’s in the food and what it is that you’re putting into your body.

Question 2: What is causing our population to be obese?

RC: Alright and what do you think is causing our population to be obese – in addition to what you’ve just been saying.

Dr. Matthew Phinney: Wow, you know we could spend an hour on this topic and this topic alone. I think one of the big things is sugar. One of the big things and this is even back in the 80’s everyone was thinking “Oh fat is what makes us fat.” “Eating fat is bad.” “Fat makes us fat.” And so everything went fat free – so you see fat free this and fat free that. And what they ended up doing when they got rid of all the fat is the taste. And the flavor was so bad, people don’t want to eat it so they started to spike it with sugar and other chemicals. Different sweeteners/artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors. And so anytime you see fat free, really what that means is sugar. So it’s not really fat that makes us fat, it’s the inability to burn fat and it’s the sugar consumption because sugar is actually stored as fat and we now consume more sugar in a day than our ancestors consumed in an entire year. That’s right out of a book. It’s called Sugar Busters and it’s a great book. So I think sugar is one of the big things.

Also, it is what we’re putting into our food – all of the antibiotics, the hormones that we’re putting into the meat. The genetically modified foods – corn, soy – two of the most genetically modified crops on the planet.

And we live in one of two countries that they don’t label, there’s no transparency in labeling GMOs or genetically modified food. It’s the U.S. and New Zealand.

And so there’s really very little transparency in labeling and the reason why is we have a very powerful food lobby in Washington. They’re powerful. They have lots of money and that’s what they’re in the business to do is making more money. So they’ve gotten people to eat more and more food for cheap food than we have ever at any other time in history had.

Question 3: Are supplements part of your nutrition advice?

RC: Alright so switching gears a little, are supplements part of your nutrition advice?

Dr. Matthew Phinney: Yeah, most definitely. Again when we talked about nutrient depleted, we have less nutrients in our food than ever before but more calories. So we need to botcher that because you can eat and eat and eat but you still feel hungry and the reason why is we don’t have the same amount of nutrients that we once had in our food. So we have to botcher that, we have to use different supplements in order to get it to the levels that we need it so we can function, so we can be healthy.

A couple supplements I do recommend and I recommend everybody take them in today’s nutritional landscape:

One of them is chlorella. It’s a whole food food. It’s a green super food. So its chlorophyll, it’s fantastic for the digestive and immune system.

Omega 3 fatty acids, muscles need protein, bones need calcium, your brain and your nervous system requires omega 3 fat in order to work properly. We can’t eat enough fish nowadays without glowing in the dark with mercury poisoning so supplementing with an Omega 3 and making sure it’s molecularly distilled. Then there’s a specific ratio you want to look for with that fish oil as well in terms of EPA to DHA.

D3 the sun vitamin, that’s one. Again bones, immune system, a requirement. If you’re not getting ten minutes front and back bathing suit attire every day then you require vitamin D3.

Quality multi-vitamin and a good probiotic for gut and intestinal health. Those are the five that I recommend everybody use and everybody take in order to keep their body functioning properly.

Question 4: Can nutrition help with fatigue?

RC: Now for people suffering from fatigue, can nutrition help with fatigue?

Dr. Matthew Phinney: Yeah without a doubt. The foods that we eat play a major role in our energy and the energy economy in our body. Go to Starbucks in the morning, what do you see there? The lineup is around the corner. We’re in an energy crisis. We don’t have enough of it and people are looking to the sugar, they are looking to the caffeine. So it gives us that quick spike but also gives us a big low. It gives us a big drop afterwards. So we got to keep going back for more and more and more.

So proper nutrition, proper hydration, yeah those all really really can help with our energy levels and our productivity levels because energy is defined as the ability to do work. You know, the more energy that you have, the more productive you are. If your job depends on your energy, you know if you’re in sales or you’re dealing with people and you go and have this big Olive Garden pasta bread bowl lunch and come back in the afternoon, you might as well have a nap in your chair there because you’re likely not getting a whole ton done.

So yeah, you’ve all experienced it. Nutrition plays a huge role in our energy and our energy levels and our fatigue. And really the sort of the paradox is – we’re not exercising because we’re tired. And we’re tired and we’re not exercising because we’re not eating properly. So it’s a cycle that we’ve got to get in there and we’ve got to break it.

Question 5: Is there a diet that you recommend to patients?

RC: Okay great and do you have a diet that you recommend to your patients?

Dr. Matthew Phinney: So everybody, you know there’s obviously different levels and different people and different sort of spectrums with different things going on so there’s not sort of one standard broad stroke diet or solution that I recommend across the board. You know somebody that has Type 2 diabetes, we don’t recommend them going out and eating tons of fresh raw fruits. So it really comes down to what’s specifically going on with that person and then tailoring or putting together a diet that’s going to work specifically for them. One of the things we will recommend in certain situations is a twenty-one day nutritional cleanse using all whole-food foods. Really helps give people (that have had struggles losing weight or haven’t seen results) it really helps give them that kick start.

Then there’s a couple other exercise program protocols that we’ll actually do in the office and we do those on Tuesday nights. We do a Nutrition, Weight Loss, Cleansing workshop. Then we also do a High Intensity Interval Training workshop that teaches people how to exercise, how to move and really turn their body into a lean mean fat burning machine in as little as twelve minutes a week. And then it really comes down to you know another big part of it is your beliefs and if you really want to know what your beliefs are in terms of nutrition and health just look at how you’re doing right now and that’s going to tell you. And so we do a Think Better workshop as well.

So all those three things really encompass and we get those together and we get everything aligned and working and heading in that same direction. The results that we see are often times miraculous. And people are like, “I didn’t even realize this was possible!” So yeah, it really comes down to what’s going on specifically with that person in terms of diet and then we consult and we put together a tailored plan specifically for them.

RC: Great, okay so thank you so much Dr. Phinney. We know you’re really busy so I just want to thank you for your time and your help today.
