Types of Migraine

Different Types of Migraines

Migraines are a type of headache that can be debilitating and affect your quality of life. Various types of migraines can affect your vision. Depending on what kind of migraine you are experiencing, you will be able to tell from your vision. Our team at Woodgrove Pines Clinic in Nanaimo is here to help you understand the different types of migraines you may encounter.

Migraine with Aura

Migraine with aura typically includes visuals along with the pain. You may see flashes, lines, shapes, and other visual distortions, and you may experience a temporary loss of vision. You may also experience tingling in your arms and legs and notice your other senses aren't working the way they should. Seeing visual auras can signal the onset of future migraine pain, or both can occur simultaneously.

Migraine Without Aura

Migraine without aura is the pain of a migraine without the visuals associated with aura migraines. Migraines with and without aura are the most common types.

Chronic

Chronic migraines are defined as a migraine that happens for at least 15 days every month for over three months. Migraine symptoms are present on eight days each month.

With Brainstem Aura

All the classic pain symptoms are present and include symptoms of impaired vision, language, or sense. Vertigo, slurred speech, tinnitus, unsteadiness, double vision, and sensitivity to sound are also involved. Two of the latter symptoms need to be present to qualify a migraine as with brainstem aura.

Silent Migraine

A silent migraine has all the physical aspects of a migraine sans pain. Aura is the most common sign of a headache, but other migraine symptoms and nausea can also be present.

Hormonal Migraine

These types of migraines happen only in women who are about to start their period. These migraines occur when the hormone estrogen drops as the period begins. These migraines tend to be more severe than average and last longer too. These headaches are rare, and most women who get them tend to have other migraine issues as well.

Retinal Migraines

A retinal migraine can cause sporadic loss of vision. It is a rare condition and only affects one eye.
