Types of Migraines

Most people confuse migraines with headaches. However, migraines are more than just a headache. Typical migraines are accompanied by other symptoms, including vomiting, nausea, and dizziness. Did you know that there are different types of migraines? Our team at Woodgrove Pines Wellness Clinic in Nanaimo takes a look at the different types of migraines and how a chiropractor can help.

Migraines with Aura

One in three people is likely to experience a migraine with an aura. The classic symptom is an aura (seeing blind spots or flashing lights) that happens before the headache occurs. Auras typically last anywhere between five minutes and one hour. While auras are known to affect your eyesight, your speech can be affected as well. Some people experience confusion or faint, although this is quite rare.

Migraines Without Aura (Common Migraine)

This is the most common type of migraine. It happens suddenly without any warning. A migraine without aura can last between four hours and three days if left untreated or if the migraine does not respond to treatment. The frequency of these migraines can be every few years or several times per week. The symptoms of common migraines include:

  • headache on one side of the head
  • nausea/vomiting
  • light sensitivity, and possible sensitivity to smell and sounds

Abdominal Migraines

These migraines are common in children and affect about 4 percent of children and some adults. Children usually outgrow abdominal migraines, but the chance of developing migraine headaches as an adult is quite high. Common symptoms include stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. Abdominal migraines aren’t accompanied by head pain.

Menstrual Migraines

These migraines are common in women and are often linked to hormonal changes. They last longer than other migraines and usually occur before, during, and after menstruation.

Vestibular Migraines

If you experience a combination of symptoms like vertigo, dizziness, loss of balance, and other migraine symptoms, you could be experiencing a vestibular migraine.
