Are Drugs ineffective for Sciatica?

I've been treating patients with sciatic pain for 24 years. Over that period of time I've easily seen over 1000 patients with lower back pain and sciatica. Time after time, patients have told me that the pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories their doctor has given them for the pain "didn't touch it". Sciatic pain can come from a variety of causes including a bulging disc pushing on the nerve root, to inflammation around the nerve, to trauma to the nerve and a variety of other conditions. Most of the causes of lower back pain and sciatica are caused by what is called "bio-mechanical dysfunction". The problem with your MD dealing with these types of conditions is that they have little to no training and education on how to correct the problem. As a chiropractor who spent the last 20 years studying bio-mechanics and trauma I know that trying to fix a mechanical problem with drugs has little chance of success. It is just difficult to see people who could be helped suffer needlessly. Every week I see a new patient who has had sciatic pain for months (and even years) who have taken a bunch of different pills, seen physical therapists (who I recommend for post surgery rehab and extremity issues, but not for mechanical back injuries) and pain management doctors without relief. In this age of opiate abuse and addiction, it is my hope that more MDs will be open to trying some safe effective alternatives like chiropractic or non-surgical spinal decompression. We offer both of these effective alternatives in our Roseville office.
