Migraine Headaches and the Standard Approach

If you suffer from migraine headaches, you are not alone. In fact, you are part of a family of migraine sufferers who is much bigger than it should be. And as you know, this is not one big, happy family. Chronic migraines affect millions of people in the US and a big chunk of those people experience headaches almost daily. Of course, the severity and urgency of this problem has prompted the fields of science and healthcare to explore the ways and means to bring relief to the pain. There are 3 standard treatments for chronic migraine headaches: Medication management, trigger point injections, and botox Injections. But do any of these methods actually address the underlying cause of migraines?

The Functional Neurology Approach to Chronic Migraine Headaches

After reviewing the standard medical treatments for chronic migraine headaches, it is important to point out that none of them are geared towards problem solving, or figuring out the real cause. None of them are based on understanding the mechanisms behind the pain, or how to permanently resolve it. Let’s outline some of the testing and procedures Functional Neurology uses in order to investigate and treat chronic migraine headaches.

#1 Check for Inflammation. Inflammation can be present in either the body, the brain, or both. The presence of inflammation is a signal that the immune system is overactive and needs to be addressed in order to quench the fire. Chronic inflammation means constant irritation which could affect body tissues as well as nerves and brain tissue, predisposing it to abnormal function. Investigating the causes of immune activation could include factors such as: hidden infections, food allergies, toxic exposure, nutrient depletion, genes and more…

#2 Check for Neurotransmitter Dysfunctions. You’ve probably heard the term ‘chemical imbalance’, but has anyone ever objectively tested your brain chemicals? We have the capability of checking exactly which neurotransmitters may be depleted, or which are overactive. Either situation could predispose to abnormal brain function.

#3 Check for Proper Function of the Brain and Nerves. In addition to chemistry, the brain runs on electricity. The vibrancy of the electrical transmission in the brain can be checked during a thorough functional neurology exam. The goal is to determine which ‘circuits’ are involved and to what extent. Dr Adam can use musculoskeletal treatments to correct this.

#4 Check for Hormonal Dysfunctions. Multiple hormonal systems can be affected by, and contribute to, chronic migraine headaches. It is important to see exactly how the endocrine system is involved in a situation of chronic migraine headaches. These factors could include the thyroid, adrenals, pancreas, and pituitary glands.

Then what to do about all this…
At Imagine X, our goal is to figure out exactly why you are having chronic migraine headaches, and what to do to fix it. Dr. Adam might choose to explore any or all of these health factors, specific to your history and examination. Putting the pieces together, and using treatment that produces excellent results.
