"News Around Our World"

Hello, my friends.

Here's a quick update on what we've been up to lately:

Seminars

I just returned from a two day seminar in Indianapolis sponsored by the International Chiropractors Association of Indiana. For eight hours on Saturday, Dr. Jeffrey Blanchard from California presented his "Golf Injury Seminar."Dr. Blanchard has studied and taught the subject around the country for a number of years, and put on an excellent program.

The four hour Sunday session was entitled, "The Basics:Chiropractic Medicare Workshop 2005-2006," and was taught by Dr. Gary Street of Olney, Illinois, who is likewise a national authority on his subject.Dr. Street also did a fine job.

Four weeks ago, I attended a seminar sponsored by the Indiana State Chiropractic Association (we have two associations in Indiana). The Saturday session was taught by Dr. Ron Daulton, Jr. from Hammond, and covered the proper utilization of the various "adjunctive therapies" in a chiropractic office."Adjunctive therapies" basically means anything we do in addition to the chiropractic adjustment, including both "passive" and "active" procedures."Passive" means you come in and lie around while we do things to you, like massage, mechanical traction, electrical muscle stimulation, axial decompression, cold laser, and so on."Active" means things in which you have to actively participate, like therapeutic exercises.Dr. Daulton is an excellent teacher.

The Sunday program was another Medicare presentation, this time by Dr. John Lockenour, who practiced in Bedford for many years until his recent retirement from practice to teach at Palmer Chiropractic College-Florida in Port Orange, near Daytona.Dr. Lockenour has been a highly respected instructor on a variety of topics for several decades.

Coming up right away, on April 8-9, I'm scheduled to attend a seminar with Dr. Jeff Spencer, who's known throughout the chiropractic world for his work with elite athletes. He's the personal chiropractor to both Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods.I'm excited to hear what Dr. Spencer has to say, and to learn his treatment protocols.

Also on the program is Dr. James Oschman, a Ph.D. who's written a couple of books on Energy Medicine.I'm in the process of reading his most recent one, "Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance," although I must admit, it's a pretty deep read for a simple guy like me.Pretty technical stuff.

In May, we'll be taking the staff out to a seminar in Dallas. It's put on by the consulting group we've hired to help us set up our new rehab department. There's a whole list of high-profile speakers scheduled, and we're really looking forward to it.

In The Office

The last couple of weeks, we've been interviewing candidates to fill our new staff position, which will consist primarily of working one-on-one with patients on therapeutic exercise training. The purpose is not to compete with our local YMCA or the physical therapy department at the hospital - those folks do a great job in their respective fields, and we hope to work more closely with both in the future.

In a chiropractic office, however, the primary focus is on correction of something called the "vertebral subluxation," which is a loss of normal motion or position of spinal structures, resulting in interference to the nerve system.Unfortunately, although the average patient would like to just "drop off their spine" like they would their car, and pick it up when it's fixed, the truth is that to achieve true correction of the problem, it's necessary to stretch tight muscles and shortened ligaments, strengthen weak ones, and balance everything from left to right and top to bottom.Hence our new rehab department.

I'm also working on mastering Power Point, so I can put together a New Patient Workshop and some other teaching programs. Our goal is to create a wellness environment with as many options for our patients as possible, then let them pick and choose which programs they wish to pursue, based on their own unique individual goals.Ultimately, our purpose is not just to relieve symptoms, but to help people maximize their true potential as human beings, and that means addressing the "whole person" in every possible aspect.

Wishing you health, happiness and peace,

Dr. Frank Bowling
