Sciatica Stretches for Pain Relief

Sciatica is a condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can cause pain, tingling and numbness in the legs and lower back. Stretching the back and legs helps relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve, giving patients some relief. Below are some of the stretches and exercises we recommend to patients who suffer from pain of the sciatic nerve.

Stretches to Relieve Sciatic Pain

If you experience sciatic pain on a regular basis, these stretches can help you feel better.

  1. Knee to opposite shoulder stretch. Lay flat on your back and pull your knee up to your chest. Gently twist the torso until your knee touches opposite shoulder (or at least as close as you can get).
  2. Standing hamstring. With your legs held straight, put your foot on an elevated surface so that the foot is at hip height or slightly below. Lean forward over your elevated foot and grab hold of your toes.
  3. Knees to chest. Lay on your back and hug your knees to your chest. Hold the pose for 30 seconds. This stretch is best done on a bed or soft surface. 

Be Safe When Doing Stretches
