Why is Stretching Important?

When you stretch you relax and loosen your muscles, while also switching the tension in your body. This limbers your muscles so you are less prone to strains and sprains. As a result, stretching prior to physical activity, such as bicycling, basketball, or dog walking, is recommended. Stretching also increases the circulation of oxygen-rich blood throughout the muscles, which improves healing for injured tissue.

What is a Good Stretch for My Neck When at Work?

As you sit at your desk at work, you can stretch your neck with ease. Start by sitting upright with good posture, leaving your arms to your sides. Slowly bend your neck so your head goes toward your left shoulder, then to your right. Hold at each shoulder for five seconds. Return your head upright. Then bend backward and forward in the same manner. Do this for five repetitions periodically throughout the day when tense.

How Should I Stretch My Lower Back Safely?

The lower back is the most common part of the back to be injured. If you are concerned with a herniated disc, sciatica, or lower back pain, start stretching your back using this method. Lay down on your stomach. Use your forearms to move your upper body up until you start to feel your lower back stretch. Hold for at least five breaths. Repeat and do as needed to stretch your lower back muscles.
