It's true that good posture is a reflection of the way we look and feel about ourselves, but it's much more than that. Proper posture is one of the simplest things each of us can do to help our bodies stay healthy and pain free.
Proper posture can prevent muscle pain, stiffness, shoulder tension and back aches. In the long run, it can also prevent arthritis and neuropathology.
So remember, when you're sitting in your chair at work, make sure your ears are directly above your shoulders. Imagine a BALOON pulling you up towards the sky from the top of your head. Once the baloon pulls you up, RELAX the shoulders and let them "hang" straight down.
The head weighs approximately 10 pounds. When positioned directly over the shoulders this weight is balanced and causes minimal stress on the spine. If your head is forward it can put excessive stress on the joints in the lower neck which over long periods of time can lead to degenerative changes.
The chart below demonstrates the detriments associated with forward head posture.
So, when you find yourself slouching, immediately self-correct! Constantly remind yourself of "the baloon"! Sit tall, relax your shoulders, and be persistent!
