Enjoying Winter without Hurting Your Back (or any other body part)

Winter brings its own set of joys, from snow-covered landscapes to the thrill of winter sports. However, the season also poses challenges, especially when it comes to keeping your back and other body parts safe.

Looking to embrace winter this year? You can do it and still stay safe. Let’s explore valuable insights to help you navigate winter without risking injury.

Navigating the Winter Ice

The slick sidewalks and icy patches that winter brings can be treacherous. Don’t worry! Follow these practical tips for preventing falls and minimizing injury if you do slip.

We found excellent tips from the Canadian Chiropractic Association for preventing slips and falls:

  • Choose the right footwear

  • Plan ahead - give yourself extra time

  • Don’t be distracted

  • Be on the lookout for ice

  • Be prepared

  • Use support, like handrails, when available

  • Walk like a penguin

Stay safe on the Minnesota ice and if you do fall, we have you covered with chiropractic care

Snow Shoveling Safety Tips

Snow shoveling might be a winter necessity, but it can also be a major strain on your back. From proper lifting techniques to the right shovel for the job, these insights can make a significant difference in maintaining your winter health.

Tips to Avoid Injuries

  • Push the snow ahead. Never throw it behind you.

  • Avoid twisting your hands and wrists. If you already have an injury, wear a brace.

  • Bend your knees and use your legs to lift, not your back.

  • Avoid twisting your back when lifting or throwing the snow off the shovel.

  • Be aware of ice, which can cause you to fall. Throw salt on the ice to melt it or kitty litter to add traction.

  • Take breaks as needed, so you don’t over-stress your body. If you are short of breath, feel dizzy or feel chest pain, stop shoveling immediately.

  • Look for the best-sized shovel for you. A shovel that doesn’t fit your body will cause you to over-compensate and may lead to injury.

  • Wear proper-fitting boots, which give your feet the proper support.

If you do feel sore after removing snow, try icing the strained area every 20 minutes and see your chiropractor.
