Chiropractic care helps more than necks and backs. One common ailment, hiatal hernias, is an example. Many Burnsville patients find relief with a natural, non-invasive chiropractic.
It's estimated that more than 40 percent of people have a type of hiatal hernia. People age 50 and over have an increased for hiatal hernias and about 60 percent of people in this age group have a hiatal hernia.
A hiatal hernia when your stomach is displaced and piercing through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Basically, your stomach is up behind your chest.
Symptoms range in severity and some individuals may not even experience symptoms.
Hiatal hernia symptoms may include:
Frequently, patients are diagnosed with GERD as a reason for their heartburn, so they are prescribed proton pump inhibitors. Unfortunately, these drugs are not addressing the root cause of the problem.
Although the root cause of hernias may vary, the western diet is not helping the issue. Adding more fiber to your diet will help to avoid issues and help with the symptoms. Being aware of what you eat is the first step. Increase the amount of vegetables, legumes and other high-fiber foods to help your digestive system perform better and help to alleviate some symptoms.
Some experts suggest avoiding drinking when you eat. Liquids dilute the stomach acids that need to work to digest your food. You should also avoid eating for two hours and drinking for 30 minutes before you go to bed.
A study from the Journal of Chiropractic Education found chiropractic treatment may provide “therapeutic benefit to those suffering from this disorder.” Chiropractic uses manipulation to adjust the stomach back into place. And, it’s natural and drug-free.
If you are having any of the symptoms of a hiatal hernia, we suggest scheduling a consultation at Skyline Chiropractic.
