Experiencing leg cramps or dizziness? Water may be the key.

If you are experiencing leg cramps and dizziness, you are not alone. This time of year, we see a lot of patients who complain of these same symptoms.

What’s happening? Dehydration.

Summertime Heat

In Minnesota, summer is precious. And, we want to be out in the hot sun as much as possible. Plus, there is more of that hot sun than usual this year. Which means, we need to be more conscious of our body’s reaction to the high temperatures.

When your body is shouting for water, be sure to listen.

“Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don't replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms of Dehydration

When your body needs water, those symptoms of dehydration may vary.  Common symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Leg cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased thirst
  • Decreased urination
  • Less tear production
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Lightheadedness
  • Headache

Water is Key

Drinking water is the key to staying hydrated. And, when it’s hot, you should drink more than you may think. Consider filling up a very large water bottle and drinking all of it over a couple hours.

If you are not a fan of plain water, consider these ideas:

  • Add lemon, mint, basil or other natural flavorings.
  • Drink hydration drinks like sports drinks
  • Ice pops or frozen water pops
  • Clear broths

The key is to hydrate even when you don’t think you're thirsty. To avoid dizziness and leg cramps, fill the water bottle and be sure to empty it.

If you think you’re experiencing other issues, make an appointment for a full chiropractic evaluation.
