What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis Is the Curvature of the Spine to One Side

In people with scoliosis, their spines curve to one side. The curve can be in the middle or near the rear of the spine.

Causes of Scoliosis

In children, scoliosis may be caused by:

• Birth defects
• Diseases that cause neuromuscular damage like cerebral palsy
• No known cause

In adults, scoliosis is may be caused by

• Being over 65
• Scoliosis from childhood that was never treated or never diagnosed until adulthood
• No known cause

Symptoms of Scoliosis

There are symptoms which develop before the spine becomes obviously deformed. These include:

• Uneven waist
• Shoulders at slightly different heights
• Hips are at slightly different heights
• The rib cage is slightly tilted
• Slight head tilt

Over time, the spine deforms so that a person seems to shrink. No matter the cause, in adults, scoliosis causes constant back pain.
