Dr. Michael Sheppard Brings Utilization Review

Dr. Michael Sheppard Brings Utilization Review Expertise to Moody Health Center

PASADENA, Texas – Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) welcomes Michael Sheppard, DC to the Moody Health Center (MHC) faculty. Dr. Sheppard’s addition highlights TCC’s commitment to educating its students on the business management skills needed to graduate as practice-ready doctors of chiropractic.

“Dr. Sheppard’s unique understanding of the internal system dynamics of today’s insurance industry make him a great addition to the TCC clinical faculty as we move forward with implementing a practice-ready business curriculum,” noted TCC’s president Brad McKechnie, DC, DACAN.

Dr. Sheppard has practiced as a doctor of chiropractic since graduating from TCC in 1999. In addition to private practice, he served as a medical manager for The Hartford, overseeing medical case management and preauthorization across multiple jurisdictions.

Dr. Sheppard explains that “the biggest challenge that new chiropractors face is balancing the business side of chiropractic with a commitment to providing patient-centered, evidence-informed care. My work history prepared me for this opportunity by teaching me to navigate the rules governing patient eligibility for treatment. I really look forward to sharing that experience with the next generation of TCC graduates.”

Indeed, Dr. Sheppard’s expertise working within the utilization review process is a valuable asset for the MHC and its interns. Throughout his career, Dr. Sheppard has conducted medical reviews on impairment ratings, maximum medical improvement and the medical necessity of treatment in personal injury and worker’s compensation cases in all 50 states. Dr. Sheppard is a certified Designated Doctor for the state of Texas and a member of the National Registration of Certified Medical Examiners. His familiarity with utilization review will help TCC students develop a solid understanding of the official state treatment and return to work guidelines used by third parties to determine patient eligibility for treatment.

The increased availability of onsite x-ray and other technology, broader treatment parameters and a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility are all key factors driving Dr. Sheppard’s decision to join the faculty of the MHC. “I am thrilled to have access to the MHC’s cutting-edge resources that will allow me to build a thriving, active practice. I hope my practice can serve as a model for TCC interns preparing to enter the chiropractic profession,” Sheppard said. Dr. Sheppard’s desire to participate in DOT ratings, maximum medical improvement rating examinations and proper utilization guidelines will be a significant advantage for interns working at the MHC.
