Rehab and Relief with Physical Medicine
You might be surprised to learn that our team at Total Chiropractic & Wellness Center offers physical medicine to Sugar Land patients in addition to chiropractic care. But what does this term mean, what all does it entail, and how does it complement
spinal adjustment? Let us examine the basics.
While both practices address musculoskeletal problems, we use chiropractic adjustment to correct issues involving hard tissue (bones) and physical medicine to help heal soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments). If you get into an auto accident, for instance, you may suffer a spinal misalignment that dislodges discs and causes nerve pain, but you may also experience torn muscles or strained ligaments in your back or neck. This gives us the double challenge of correcting the misalignment and ensuring proper recovery of the soft tissues.
We may prescribe several different forms of therapy to help you regain full strength and flexibility. Corrective exercises are important for preventing or reversing muscle atrophy, a problem which sometimes accompanies nerve impingement or damage. These exercises may even make you stronger than you were before your injury, which will help prevent re-injury. They are also valuable for helping to prevent (or release) adhesions, internal scar tissue accumulations that can impede the recovery and flexibility of muscles and connective tissues. As you heal, we carefully monitor your progress, and recommend adaptive equipment as needed to ease you back on the road to health as safely and effectively as possible.
Pain management is another important aspect of this type of healing. We frequently apply heat and/or cold therapy to relieve pain and swelling. You might also benefit from specific nutritional supplements to help your joints remain limber or even nutritional counseling if your weight or eating habits are likely to influence your recovery.
