School lunches can be tough for all parents. Trying to find the balance between healthy food and what your kids like can be a struggle in most households. Ultimately we want our kids to eat as many fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, nuts and seeds, etc, and stay away from sugary and processed foods and drinks. But the struggle is real!
Starting this year, our oldest daughter started wanting to pack her lunch each day, and for the most part she does a good job staying within the guidelines we set for her. But once in a while she goes a little overboard and puts too many of certain kinds of things. So my wife and I created a check list for her to follow:
- A main dish, which in the past has been turkey rollies (rolled sliced turkey with sliced cheese), soup which we make most of the time if we can, or left overs of dinner that they like.
- 1 fresh fruit
- 2 veggies
- nuts or seeds
- a snack consisting of peanut butter crackers, rice cake, chips or something in this category
- and if behavior and school work are on point, once a week a piece of candy.
It may not be a perfect system in the eyes of the healthiest of eaters (even in mine), but in the reality of kids, it is pretty good considering they are eating relatively well at home otherwise, and stay very active with sports, dance, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
