Vitamin D and Diabetes: What is the connection?

Type 2 Diabetes is a disease process where your blood glucose (sugar) levels rise higher than normal, due to your body not using insulin properly.  1 in 3 Americans are at risk for developing diabetes. Many Americans also suffer for insufficient levels of Vitamin D, both obtained in their diet, as well as the activated form of Vitamin D gained by sun exposure.   An article put out by the Vitamin D Council discusses research that shows that when people's Vitamin D levels were lower, they had more than 3 times the risk of developing pre-diabetes, measured by bloodworm, and more than 5 times the risk of those who were pre-diabetic to develop type 2 diabetes.

In our office when we talk about health, we discuss several pillars of health, one of the most important, and most controllable is our diet and nutrition.   There are times, even for those who eat a very healthy and diverse diet, when we do not get all of the quantities of nutrients that we need, and in some cases need to use a supplement to bridge the nutritional gap.  Often times, only a few supplements are really needed.  Most of the times, I will recommend the following supplements as a baseline to a good diet, and then fill in the gaps with other things as needed: Multi-vitamin, Magnesium, Vitamin D, EPA/DHA (fish oil), and CoQ10.

When using Vitamin D, we recommend using an Emulsified version to aid in increased digestion and absorption.  In the office, we use Biotics Research Vitamin D, and in many cases 1 bottle can last 3-4 months, and is very inexpensive in comparison to others that are out there.  If you have any questions about Vitamin D or other nutrition supplements, please contact our office.  (386) 492-4881

Testimonial

  • "I started to come to Dr. Phil because I have a lot of problems with my neck. When I come, he gives me tremendous relief. I don’t suffer from headaches anymore because he adjusts my neck, which is very, very hard to adjust. He has massage therapists that have also helped me a lot, so I am really, really grateful for Dr. Phill."
