So, as many of you guys know, practicing yoga can be great for your spine! It can help you build core strength and stability, stretch and balance muscles, and improve your balance overall, among a multitude of other benefits. But don't think that you have to jump in to the most extreme yoga scenario around. There is yoga for EVERY level out there, every age, every body type. There is chair yoga, there is hot yoga, there s aerial yoga, and many more versions of this great practice.
Research has shown yoga can also help improve lower back pain...SCORE!!! As chiropractors, we are always looking to guide our patients to lead healthier lives, and one of the ways that is most challenging at times is the movement aspect of the health triad. The triad consists of Eating Well, Moving Well, and Thinking Well! One facet of the Moving Well side of things is exercise and mobility, both of which are encompassed while practicing yoga.
But here is a word of warning for those just starting out. Don't feel that you have to jump right in as intense as everyone else in the class. Every movement in yoga can be modified to suit your level. If there are movements or positions that hurt, are too hard to hold, or feel too challenging, communicate this with the instructor and they should be able to guide you to a more easily obtainable movement or position. Below is a link to an article that discusses yoga a little more, and how it can benefit you! Yoga coupes with chiropractic care can pack a huge pain fighting and health boosting punch!
