Not only are hobbies and leisure activities enjoyable, but they also provide some significant physical and mental health benefits.

  • Enhance the Immune System: Active hobbies and activities get the body moving which, if done consistently, can help prevent or maintain control in some chronic illnesses such as heart disease.
  • Improve Flexibility: Moving around stretches your muscles and, in turn, improves flexibility. Hobbies such as yoga, swimming, painting and Wii Bowling are great for improving flexibility.
  • Improve Memory: Many hobbies challenge your mental abilities and improve problem-solving skills. Some, like crossword puzzles and brain games, can offer mental stimulation related to completing the task.
  • Reduce Stress: Most people pursue hobbies because they enjoy them and aren’t even aware that the same hobby helps them release daily stresses. Cooking, gardening, and reading are a few hobbies that can create a calm, quiet atmosphere that reduces stress and helps mental stimulations at the same time.
  • Improve Self Esteem: Many hobbies – like card games, board games, or scrapbooking – involve other participants which can create social opportunities and improve self-esteem by interacting with others in a fun atmosphere.
  • Better Quality of Sleep: Being more active during the day helps create a more restful night’s sleep but be sure to give yourself a proper amount of time to wind down before hitting the pillow.
