The British Medical Journal Lancet says that for low back pain they have 2 recommendations. Number 1 keep active. Number 2 try Chiropractic adjustments. What they are really saying is avoid surgery and drugs neither of which have proven beneficial. The Lancet maybe over simplifying. Sometimes rest or inactivity is just what your back needs initially but not for too long. NSAIDs are safe for a short period of time ie 1 to 2 weeks and can be helpful. The bottom line is that reasons for low back pain vary. If you are having repetitive problems or if pain persist past 1 to 2 weeks see a specialist. Find out what is actually going on. See your Chiropractor for a thorough history, exam and x ray. He will know the best way to reduce pain for your specific condition. Also he will know what to do fix the problem so it will be less likely to reoccur.
