There are many different styles of massage, and all of them serve specific therapeutic needs. Touch, techniques and additional tools used all vary depending on the massage type. A sports massage at your Los Altos chiropractor and wellness center can bring numerous benefits. They include:
Sports massage is different from a relaxation or Swedish massage in that relaxation isn’t the primary focus. Los Altos sports massage involves targeted treatment of the muscles and biomechanical system of the athlete or active person. The goal is faster recovery times, deep healing and improved overall sports performance.
Sports massage involves a firmer touch that’s intended to release any knots, tension or scar tissue that has formed in the muscle. This, in turn, helps to improve flexibility and range of motion while reducing pain and stiffness.
Again, you should be aware ahead of time that a Los Altos sports massage does not involve light, sweeping surface level movements. You can expect your massage therapist to go deep where it is required. The goal is to restore better functioning and circulation to your hard-working muscles, tendons and fascia. It will not always be a walk in the park. Communicating with the massage therapist before and during the massage is essential to an ideal experience.
Check the credentials and reviews of massage therapists before signing on with one. At Reimer Chiropractic & Massage Wellness Center, our professional massage therapists are established and well known for their expertise in their chosen specialty.
When you’re dehydrated, the muscles and fascia can become stiff, resulting in a more painful experience during a sports massage. Since the goal is to optimize muscle functioning, the more fluid and pliable the tissue, the more effective the massage can be. Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to the massage. (As an athlete, staying hydrated should already be a priority.)
This is a good idea before any massage type. A full stomach can make the massage less enjoyable and even uncomfortable, especially when you are lying face down on your stomach.
Since a sports massage tends to go deep in order maximize muscle functioning, it isn’t a good idea to schedule it too close to a competition or particularly strenuous training session. To be safe, allow for at least 3 days recovery time between a sports massage and a major athletic event.
At Reimer Chiropractic & Massage Wellness Center, we offer a range of massage types to fit your needs and wellness goals. Sports massage can be a highly valuable component of a successful athletic or fitness experience. In addition to Los Altos, we also service the Mountain View and San Francisco Bay areas.
