San Francisco Chiropractor discusses Biology of humans v. dogs

Both humans and dogs are mammals.  Mammals are animals with vertebrae.  Rats, cats, dogs, deer, monkeys, apes, bats, whales, dolphins are all mammals.

Anatomically, dogs are very similar to us.  They have the same organs (except they have no appendix).  They have blood types just like we do but more varieties.

They can get illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease, adrenal issues and cancer.  They can also develop problems that we do not experience such as distemper or parvovirus.  Foods can highly affect a dogs health just like it does a human being.

Dogs and humans have very similar brain structures and biochemistry.

The spinal column is a bit different with dogs than humans: Here are how many bones are in each section of the spinal column:

Humans:                                          Dogs:

Neck: 7                                            Neck: 7
Thoracic: 12                                    Thoracic: 13
Lumbar: 5                                        Lumbar: 7
Sacrum: 5                                        Sacrum: 3
Tail bone: 3-5                                  Tail bone: up to 23

They have 42 teeth opposed to 32 on humans.  Their heartbeat is 60-80 in large breed dogs and 100-140 beats per minute in small dog breeds.  They have 220-300 million scent cells in their nose opposed to 5 million for humans.  Dogs sleep 12 hours on average per day and humans sleep around 8.

Just like your dog, people need to exercise, eat well and get body work. Keeping your dog limber and active keeps them alive longer and healthier.  Humans have the same needs, love, attention, stress relief, proper nutrition and body work to stay healthy.
