Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a progressive ailment of the hands and wrists. It entails swelling in both the

wrist and hand region which causes damage to the nerves in that area. Causes of CTS include musculoskeletal problems such as changes to the joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. It can also be developed due to pregnancy or obesity, and even Hyperthyroidism, Arthritis and Diabetes.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome usually develops slowly but progresses into a more intense form with pain, numbness, tingling and coldness. The pain may become so severe that it shoots up the entire length of the arm. If the disorder progresses it is even possible for fine motor coordination and strength to deteriorate due to the increasing numbness. Constant pain could then lead to insomnia and the lack of sleep. The sufferer may also begin to drop objects such as writing utensils and silverware, which impedes their quality of life even further. The neck and shoulder area often become uncomfortable, as well.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the better the chance of it progressing into an out of control problem. The first step in diagnosis would be to have a thorough examination. The doctor would be looking for swelling, discoloration and deformity. Tests including tapping the wrist to note tingling, which is called Tinel's sign, or Phalen's maneuver which involves the bending forward of the wrist. Blood tests may be done in order to discover any underlying medical causes; cervical x-ray to check for "double crush syndrome" and an adrenal stress index to determine high or low cortisol levels. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes- "Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition…" Other contributing factors include:

  • Mechanical problems of the wrist and joint
  • Work stress; repeated use of vibrating hand tools
  • Fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause
  • Development of a cyst or a tumor in the canal
  • Persons with diabetes or metabolic disorders…make them more susceptible
  • Trauma or injury to the wrist that can cause swelling such as a sprain or fracture.
  • Over activity of the pituitary gland
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

If you are diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, the treatment plan will be determined by the severity of the problem. It may be essential to rest your wrist and stop the activities that are aggravating the problem. Ice may help reduce the swelling and exercises may be used to stretch the area.
