Carpal Tunnel Treatment with our Omaha Chiropractor?

Carpal tunnel syndrome, often shortened to just "carpal tunnel," is a condition in which inflammation in the wrist causes pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand. Repetitive motion is believed to cause the vast majority of cases, but other trauma to the wrist, congenital abnormalities, obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and even unknown causes can also trigger the problem.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a small space in your wrist that serves as the pathway for several tendons as well as the median nerve. This nerve controls the feeling and motion for your thumb and fingers, with the exception of the pinky finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome arises when enough pressure is put on this nerve to interfere with signal transmission. This pressure comes from swelling of the tendons and other nearby structures.

How Can This Condition be Treated?

While many people know about the surgery that opens up the carpal tunnel area, most also aren't eager to have any sort of operations. Therefore, other treatments are tried first, and surgery is only recommended if the more conservative options don't work.

  • A chiropractor in Omaha can offer some good non-surgical treatments. Chiropractic care involves treating not only the wrist, but also the arm and upper spine. Often, problems in the spine are transmitted down the median nerve, which goes all the way from the spine to the fingers. By treating all possible problem points, the chance of a successful outcome is increased.
  • Hands-on treatment will likely be just one part of your treatment. Counseling on how to do things without aggravating your wrist should also be offered, as well as exercises to do at home to help keep the hand mobile and strong. If you suffer from diabetes or obesity, nutritional counseling will be added to the mix.
  • We also offer needle-free acupuncture. This can help reduce pain and increase mobility as our chiropractic treatments do their work.

Between treatment sessions, you'll likely be advised to stop doing any activities that are known to aggravate carpal tunnel syndrome, such as repetitive motions. You may also be given a wrist brace to wear at night in order to give your carpal tunnel region enough rest to speed recovery. In some cases, you'll wear this brace during the day as well.
