Sports Injury & Rehabilitation FAQs

If you’re a highly active athlete or you regularly participate in heavy impact contact sports, chances are that experiencing a sports injury at some point is inevitable. At Campion Chiropractic Clinic, we routinely treat athletes for a range of sports-related injuries. We have over 28 years of experience to be able to quickly diagnose the condition and begin the process of treatment so you can get back on the playing field, safely, as soon as possible. As a new patient, you may have some questions about the chiropractic process of healing a sports injury. Even though you may be coming to see us because of a specific injury, we believe in building relationships that focus not just on healing your injury but setting you up so that you can best maintain your physical condition on and off the playing field and have less injurious occurrences in the future. Here are a few frequently asked questions about what you can expect when you come into our office for sports injury rehab:

Athlete suffering from knee painWhat Does Sports Injury Rehabilitation Involve?

All of our patients, for sports rehab or otherwise, always start with taking a complete health history of the patient as well as a complete physical exam. We like to have the whole picture before we begin the process of diagnosis. To help with diagnosis, we may make use of digital x-rays or MRIs as needed. Once the diagnosis is complete, we then come up with a customized solution for treatment based on your individual condition. Initial solutions may include regular use of ice packs, compression, and elevation to reduce inflammation. We will also typically suggest that patients get lots of rest and keep pressure off of the affected area. We may use a stabilizing device, such as a brace or splint, if necessary. Once we’ve completed the initial stages of forming a treatment plan, we may begin the process of joint or extremity manipulation if we determine that it will be beneficial to your condition. Lastly, we will begin recommending and supervising specific rehab exercises that you can do regularly in the office and at home to help strengthen the body and accelerate the healing process.

What Types of Conditions Can Sports Injury Rehabilitation Help With?

Some of the conditions we commonly tend to as a result of sports-related injuries are:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Headaches from contact sports
  • Tendonitis/Bursitis
  • Impingement syndromes/shoulder/elbow/wrist
  • Strains and Sprains
  • Hip/Knee/Ankle/Foot injuries
  • Disc injuries

How Long Will it Take to Recover?

Recovery will differ for each person. It all depends on your specific health history, physical fitness, emotional wellness, and personal lifestyle. Optimally, initial visits will be weekly for a few weeks and then, depending on your progress, maintenance visits can be tapered down to bi-weekly and finally, monthly or on an as-needed basis. Many athletes also choose to make special visits before big sports games or races in order to prepare their bodies to operate at peak performance and to help avoid injuries. Ultimately, the amount of time you’ll need for recovery and maintenance is best determined by having detailed conversations with your chiropractor during your sessions together.
