Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition in which the nerves which pass through a narrow canal in the wrist (the carpal bones) are compressed or entrapped, causing the nerves to become irritated. This can induce burning pain or tingling sensation in the hand or fingers, and is aggravated by constant pressure on the nerves (by poor hand position at the computer for example). It classically wakes you up during the night with pain and tingling in the fingers, and can persist for months if not corrected.
Unfortunately these symptoms are very often mis-diagnosed as CTS, when nerve entrapment in the wrist is not the real cause of the trouble. Since most doctors are not well trained in recognizing the true causes of nerve related problems, they too often call any symptoms below the elbow "carpal tunnel syndrome," when in fact these problems are more often caused by nerve irritation in the neck.
