Is your gold game back friendly?

Over the course of the past 2 decades the typical golf swing has changed dramatically. Today’s golfers have exaggerated back swings that place a tremendous amount of stress on the joints, discs, and muscles of the lower and middle back regions. Even under the best physical conditions, today’s golf swing isn’t exactly back friendly.

It appears as though golfers experiencing lower back pain have reached near epidemic proportions. In fact, one study reported that approximately 50% of those golfing regularly would develop chronic low back problems at some point in their lives.

Amateur golfers are routinely taught that rotation of the body (at the hips) is needed to maximize club head velocity and hitting distance. However, studies have demonstrated that a shorter, more compact swinging motion is not only much more effective, but also generates for less potential for spinal injury.

The reason for this epidemic is that most golfers lack the balance, flexibility, and strength crucial to developing an efficient golf swing. The low back pain that most golfers now take for granted comes from a loss of rotation during the back swing or a blockage of hip turn through impact. Each carves a different stress on the spine. Either way the end result is lower back pain.

Ask your chiropractor about the specifcs' of a more back friendly golf swing, and get the facts on how an improper swing can place unnecessary stress on your low back and spine. Following your chiropractor’s advice can help you avoid injury, and that’s a good thing, no matter how you slice it!
