Primary and secondary subluxations

Primary and Secondary Subluxations

Subluxation is the term that is used when two bones separate or shift apart from one another. Subluxations can occur anywhere within the body, but they commonly occur in the spine. This can lead to a host of other problems that are often characterized by pain, inflammation, stiffness, and feelings of general discomfort.

Primary Subluxations

Primary subluxations in the spinal column occur when the vertebrae shift, resulting in either spinal cord pressure or spinal cord tension. While pressure normally occurs within the vertebrae, the tension occurs between them. Either one can be painful and will more than likely result in both inflammation and limited range of motion. Without correction, the pain and discomfort of subluxations can become quite severe.

Secondary Subluxations

Secondary subluxations are the body's way of compensating for primary subluxations. By attempting to restore some degree of balance, the body may actually be harming itself. It can cause scar tissue to form that will prevent the vertebrae from healing correctly. Identifying secondary and tertiary subluxations will help the chiropractor find the root of the problem so it can be corrected.

Subluxations and Chiropractic Care

With chiropractic care, your chiropractor will treat both primary and secondary subluxations in an attempt to prevent a healing plateau. In many cases, other types of doctors may only treat the primary subluxation. This may relieve your pain and discomfort for a short period of time, but will not correct the actual problem.
