What Is a Herniated Disc?

The human spine is made up of vertebrae that run up and down the back. These vertebrae have discs located in between them filled with a substance known as the nucleus. When a herniated disc occurs, this fluid seeps out from the disc and into the surrounding spinal area.

This area is full of nerves that can become irritated and compressed by a herniated disc. This can lead to herniated disc symptoms including:

  • Severe lower back pain
  • Sharp pain that shoots down the sides of legs and into the extremities
  • Weakness in the extremities
  • Feeling of pins and needles in the extremities
  • Numbness of the extremities

These are all serious symptoms that can seriously impact someone's quality of life. As soon as you notice symptoms of herniated disc, it's important to visit our chiropractor for help.

How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Our chiropractor will conduct a physical exam to determine if your symptoms are caused by herniated disc or bulging disc, or another musculoskeletal ailment. They will ask questions about your pain, conduct imaging test, and determine the best treatment for your herniated disc.

One of the treatments is spinal decompression. This is also known as traction therapy and is a technique that gently pulls apart the spine using a traction table. This puts negative pressure on the spine, popping herniated discs back in place and helping provide relief. Other chiropractic care treatments may include manual and spinal adjustments for misaligned spines.
