Spinal Health: Summer Travel and Posture

Heading out on a grand adventure might seem fun, but the experience could be easily ruined by persistent pain. A good number of our patients report experiencing fatigue, soreness, and other issues while traveling. Here are a few tips on how to use proper posture to reduce neck and back pain during your next trip.

Avoiding Neck Pain While on an Airplane

Flying isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, and many people experience neck and back pain during a crowded flight. However, there are a couple of things you can do to help improve the situation. For example, when the captain turns off that seatbelt sign, get up and stretch your legs as often as possible. Don't fall asleep slouched in your seat; poor posture can create pain. It’s also a good idea to bring along a neck pillow for added comfort. If you’re stuck in an airport for an extended period of time, set a timer to get up and move around every fifteen minutes.

Make Car Rides Comfortable to Prevent Back Pain

If you're opting to drive instead of fly, there are several steps you can take to help minimize back pain. First, make sure to take frequent stops to get out and stretch. If you often fall asleep on a long car ride, bring along a neck pillow for added support. Just like with a long flight, don't fall asleep slouched in your seat. Adjust the angle of your chair’s back so that it remains supportive throughout the duration of the ride.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Posture

Of course, a trip to your local chiropractor prior to your trip is a great way to ensure you're ready for your journey. Those who practice good posture techniques all the time often report less neck and back pain while traveling. Good spinal health all year ensures your trip is comfortable, happy, and pain-free!
