What is a Herniated Disc?

Sometimes referred to as a bulging disc, a herniated disc is a medical condition that impacts the spine.  Between each vertebra are tiny cushioning devices called discs.  These discs work to absorb impact as a person bends and moves.  The discs are inner tube-shaped with a tough exterior and are filled with a jelly-like substance.  Sometimes though, a disc can become ruptured, causing some protective cushioning jelly to escape.  This condition is more common in the upper back, but can certainly occur anywhere in the spine.  Typically, herniated discs are more common with age as the discs themselves begin to wear out or become brittle.  Certain degenerative diseases have also been known to cause herniated discs.  On rare occasions, herniated discs can be caused by injury or impact.

What are the Symptoms?

Herniated disc symptoms have a wide range depending on the severity and location of the disc.  People can experience anything from a sharp stabbing pain to a dull ache.  Pain can occur in the neck, shoulders, arms, buttocks, hamstrings, or calves.  People also have experienced numbness or tingling.  Normally, if the herniated disc is in the neck or upper back the numbness is centered around the arms and shoulders.  For herniated discs in the lower back, the numbness radiates from the buttocks to the legs.  Another common symptom is people feeling like they are unable to hold onto items, and continually drop them.  People report feeling more clumsy than usual and tripping more often.

How Can Our Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor works to restore balance to the body.  When a disc is herniated, a great deal of undue pressure is applied to other parts of the spine and back including the surrounding muscles, nerves, and tendons.  Working with a chiropractor, we will determine which disc is of concern through X-rays or MRIs.  From there, your chiropractor will prescribe a treatment plan to help alleviate the symptoms.  Common chiropractic manipulation techniques may be used to ease pain and numbness.  Further, stretching and light physical therapy may be recommended.
