Is neck pain common?

Neck pain is an incredibly common complaint, with most people experiencing the issue from time to time. However, in some cases, neck pain can become severe and/or chronic. When this occurs, patients may be unable to work, participate in former hobbies, or even enjoy their lives.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can have a variety of causes. Many patients experience neck pain because of whiplash, which is an injury that occurs after a patient’s neck moves forcefully in a back-and-forth motion. Whiplash is most common after a car accident. Other issues that may contribute to neck pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Poor alignment of the vertebrae
  • Bone spurs
  • Pinched nerves
  • Herniated discs
  • Poor posture
  • Acute injuries or trauma

In many cases, a patient will experience neck pain because of multiple contributing factors.

When a patient comes to the office with neck pain, the doctor will begin by evaluating the patient’s physical condition thoroughly. The doctor will also ask questions about the patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, and any habits that may affect the neck. In addition, the doctor may order x-rays or diagnostic ultrasounds to rule out or confirm certain problems in the neck. Based on all of the information gained during this process, the doctor will identify the factors contributing to the patient’s pain.
