What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?
Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergic reaction to a sugar molecule called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) found in red meat and other mammal products. This condition is most commonly triggered by a bite from the Lone Star tick, which can cause your immune system to become sensitized to alpha-gal.
For some, exposure to alpha-gal can trigger symptoms 3–6 hours after eating red meat or dairy, and in severe cases, it may cause life-threatening allergic reactions.
