Webster Technique

Dr. Beth Greene is certified in the Webster Technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). This technique is designed to help mothers have a healthy, natural delivery.

Why Webster?

The benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy are many, but in terms of this specific technique, it helps maintain proper biomechanics of the changing pelvic structures.

How it works

This specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment technique has the goal of reducing subluxation (misalignment) of the sacroiliac joint. This helps relieve tension on the uterine ligaments, reducing intra-uterine constraint and giving baby optimal positioning during labor and delivery.

The uterus is located within the pelvic cavity and it is attached to the pelvis and sacrum (tailbone) by ligaments. During pregnancy, as the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby, these ligaments are pulled and strained. Since they are connected to the bony structures of the pelvis and sacrum, misalignments to these structures can cause greater strain on the ligaments and thus create intra-uterine constraint.

Intra-uterine constraint can ultimately obstruct normal movements of the baby, and may be a contributing factor to abnormal fetal presentation, such as posterior presentation, breech presentation, and transverse presentation.

Intra-uterine constraint can also have a direct effect on fetal positioning during labor and delivery. This can also be a leading factor in dystocia. Dystocia is defined by Williams Obstetrics as abnormal function during labor (including failure to progress, baby being “stuck”, and abnormal presentation of the fetus), and is the leading cause for invasive interventions such as using forceps or vacuum, and Cesarean section during labor and delivery.

We encourage you to talk to your midwife or OB about the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy. We co-care with many offices locally, and have an open line of communication and referral relationships with the birth professionals in our community.

*Important: Chiropractic is not the treatment of breech or intra-uterine constraint, therefore the Webster Technique is neither of the above.

Webster Technique

Subluxations where the sacrum joins the pelvis (hip) can be quite common during the course of pregnancy. Besides potentially interfering with the baby assuming the normal head-down position in preparation for delivery, it can produce a variety of symptoms in mothers preparing for the culmination of their pregnancy.

The Sacral Subluxation

Developed by the late Larry Webster, D.C., the chiropractic technique he developed and taught chiropractors around the world, helps release stress on the pelvis, relaxing surrounding ligaments and reducing the sacral subluxation to help restore more normal function.

Sacral subluxations may cause the tightening and twisting of pelvic muscles and ligaments, constraining the uterus. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and the associated dysfunction of the sacroiliac joint. The result? Neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved, benefiting pregnant mothers or others with sacral subluxations.
