Knee Pain Q & A

What can cause knee pain?

The knee joint is a complex structure. Though sturdy, it is prone to injury when the ligaments or tendons are compromised. This can be caused by a number of different sources, including:

Arthritis – Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that occurs in the knee. It is caused by the gradual degradation of the cartilage in the joint. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness or locking in the joints.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome – An inflammation of a tendon that is most often caused by stress or long-term overuse. Symptoms include aches or burning sensations at the side of the knee, and can sometimes cause pain that radiates up the side of the thigh.

Ligament, Meniscus, or Tendon Injuries – The structure around the knee can be prone to injury. This can occur from prolonged use, sudden impact, or twisting. It can cause inflammation, swelling, and pain.

Referred Pain -- Referred pain is the result of pain that initially comes from the low back facet joints, sacroiliac joints, or hip joints causing stress on the knee structure.

Can knee pain be treated with chiropractic methods?

Each situation is different and, as such, each patient will receive a personalized plan for their specific condition. After an initial assessment and a diagnosis are made, treatment may include chiropractic manipulation techniques to the knee or other joints that are causing the pain. Rehabilitation involving an exercise program might be prescribed to improve strength, endurance, and stability, and to prevent new injuries.

When should I get chiropractic treatment?

Knee pain can be mild to severe. There are several signs that indicate it may be time to seek treatment. You should seek treatment if knee pain is severe enough to limit your day-to-day activities. Dr. Whitmore will address the issues causing pain in the knee but will also investigate other alignment issues in the body that may be contributing to the pain through the use of applied kinesiology and holistic healing.
