Neck Pain FAQs

As humans, we will at some point suffer from the effects of neck pain after twisting wrong, a rough night of sleeping, or an injury. When neck pain turns from acute to chronic, it can be scary not knowing who to turn to or what to do to feel better. Neck pain can be extremely debilitating and can quickly lead to other symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and headaches. At Milton Chiropractic & Massage, our chiropractors are dedicated to helping our patients find relief from chronic and acute neck pain. Let’s look at some of the common questions that we run into regarding neck pain.

.

What Causes Neck Pain?

The causes of neck pain can vary. If you work in a hard labor job or lift heavy objects, one of the most common causes of neck pain could be a pulled muscle. This is especially true if you continue to work despite your pulled muscle.

For office workers and even students, neck pain can develop due to poor posture after hours of looking at a screen. Poor posture can quickly lead to other symptoms besides neck pain such as back and shoulder pain. Other causes of neck pain include:

  • A poor night's sleep
  • Muscle tension
  • Stress
  • Previous injuries such as whiplash
  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Herniated discs

Do I Need Help From a Chiropractor?

You might be able to treat your neck pain on your own. By resting your body, applying hot and cold packs, and taking things slow, you should find some relief at least for a while. However, if you have tried everything and feel your neck pain is becoming serious, it is always a good idea to get help from a chiropractor.

What Can a Chiropractor Do for Neck Pain?

Your chiropractor can get to the root cause of your pain by conducting a thorough physical exam along with imaging tests including x-rays and possibly MRIs. These tests will help your chiropractor determine if your neck pain is caused by an injury or muscle inflammation. We will then provide several chiropractic care options for pain relief. These options may include:

  • Massage therapy to reduce tension and inflammation in the upper back and neck area
  • Spinal decompression for neck pain caused by herniated discs
  • Cold laser therapy to help treat soft tissue injuries
