Can a Chiropractor Help with Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis refers to a spinal condition that affects the spinal bones, specifically the lower vertebrae of the body.  This condition causes one of these vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone that lies directly beneath it.  It’s an extremely painful condition and causes persistent lower back pain, tenderness in the back, and stiffness in the extremities, as well as pain in the thighs.

If you suffer from Spondylolisthesis, then chiropractic care can greatly reduce the associated pain.

How Does a Chiropractor Help with Spondylolisthesis?

The primary goal of any chiropractic treatment plan is to proactively improve posture, spinal function, and to optimize spinal mechanics.  Specifically, chiropractic care can target the spinal joints, both above and below the slipped vertebrae and can also improve motion within the region while lowering the pain in the back and thighs.

Typically, there are several different treatments that can be offered to help with spondylolisthesis.  For instance, specific spinal manipulation, flexion-distraction techniques, and instrument-assisted manipulation can all work to directly treat pain and reduce surrounding tension.

Is Chiropractic Care Effective for Treating Spondylolisthesis?

One of the reasons why chiropractic care is preferable for treating spondylolisthesis is because it is noninvasive.  In addition, it is often desirable over painful surgeries and/or treatment with medication.  This condition can be effectively treated by targeting the problem areas and manipulating the spine itself.

Spine manipulation often includes manipulation of the impaired joints, a flexion-distraction technique, which is a gentle manipulation using a pumping action, as well as instrument assisted manipulation, which applies gentle force to the spine.

Chiropractic care is extremely effective at treating spondylolisthesis because it does not overwhelm the patient; in fact, many patients are thankful for the gentle way they are eased into the treatment.
