Oxygen Therapy, What Is It?

Oxygen Therapy, What Is It?

Visiting your chiropractor is an ideal way to handle illness and injuries in a natural, holistic manner. One of the best ways to improve your approach to healing and recovery is with the combination of chiropractic care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. When you visit Spring chiropractic for adjustments, it may cause localized inflammation, which is normal in certain situations, but while healing you may notice slightly more pain. Oxygen therapy is a great way to decrease inflammation, decrease pain and it allows your body to heal from within more efficiently and quicker.

What is Oxygen Therapy?

Oxygen therapy, also referred to as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) helps to increase the natural healing process by your body through the delivery of oxygen under pressure, increasing the oxygen content in your plasma, blood, cerebral spinal fluid, and other tissues. During an oxygen therapy session, you will breathe in pure oxygen while you relax inside a chamber with pressurized air. Since the air pressure inside of the chamber is more than the normal atmospheric pressure, it helps your blood to carry more oxygen to the tissues and organs in your body. This helps to activate your blood cells to fight infection and promote quicker wound healing.

What Conditions is Oxygen Therapy Beneficial for?

Oxygen therapy is extremely beneficial for the treatment of several conditions, including:

  • Post-surgical healing
  • Chronic bone infections
  • Post-radiation complications
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Slow to non-healing skin grafts

Chiropractic patients receiving oxygen therapy typically receive treatments 3-5 days a week for about 4-6 weeks, depending on the condition your chiropractor is treating you for. Treatments generally take about 2 hours; however, your chiropractor may recommend an hour or an hour and a half if your condition does not require the full 2-hour treatment.
