Oxygen Therapy, What Is It

Oxygen Therapy, What Is It?

Are you thinking about giving oxygen therapy a try for the first time? Well, you have come to the right place. We will take care of you at Spring Chiropractic and Rehab in Spring, TX. This treatment is only available as a prescription from your doctor. Depending on your condition, you may need to receive therapy long term or just for a short period. With regular use of oxygen therapy, patients can be more active, breathe easier, and improve their quality of life.

Who Needs Oxygen Therapy?

First off, there are several various devices that you can use to receive oxygen. It can come from a tank that is filled with liquid or gas oxygen. It can also come from an oxygen concentrator that pulls oxygen out of the air. Oxygen is delivered via a mask, tent, or a nose tube. People with the following conditions may benefit from oxygen therapy:

  • Pneumonia
  • COPD
  • Sleep apnea
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Severe asthma attacks
  • Heart failure (later stages)

Keep in mind that this type of therapy is normally safe but some mild side effects are associated with it including a bloody nose, headaches, or fatigue.

There is also another type of oxygen therapy known as hyperbaric (HBOT). This therapy consists of breathing oxygen in through a tube or pressurized chamber that gives your lungs the ability to get up to three times more oxygen then you would be breathing in normal air. This additional oxygen moves through your blood straight through body tissues and organs. It is also great for treating injuries, burns, wounds, and infections. HBOT is good for treating gas embolisms which are simply bubbles in your bloodstream as well as carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness.
