Have you ever experienced pain in your arms, wrist, or hands? Did you know that it may not be a problem with your arms, wrists, or hands, but it actually may start in your neck. If you have a misalignment in your neck, that can irritate the nerves that supply your upper extremity, causing you to feel the pain in another location.
Commonly, people think that they have carpal tunnel of the wrist, tendonitis of the elbow, or shoulder issue, when the issue is in their neck!
How do I know if the pain is coming from my neck?
Taking a look at a patient's history of current complaint can reveal a lot about what may be causing the pain. For example, if a person get the pain after a long day of working on a computer or after looking down at their phone for an extended period of time, that is a sign that the pain may come from a prolonged posture of the neck and upper back. There are other tests that can be performed to find the cause of the pain, such as muscles strength testing, reflexes, range of motion, and orthopedic tests. A Chiropractor will also be able to feel the spine and test it for any misalignments that may be present.
What may be causing the neck problem?
It is important to look at the history to determine the cause of the neck problem. It could be from an injury, trauma, or accident that the patient had recently or years ago. It could be from stress. It could be from repetitive posture while seated at a desk or looking at a phone. There are many things that could have caused the neck to become misaligned. When the neck is misaligned, often we also find a lot of tight muscles in the area. The tight muscles may also be irritating the nerves, so it is important to loosen up the muscles in addition to correcting the spinal misalignment.
How is the neck problem corrected?
In our office, we try to spend a decent amount of time relaxing and loosening up the muscles in the neck. We use a variety of techniques: CranioSacral Therapy, Gua Sha, massage, and trigger point treatment. This allows the area to be adjusted very easily and gently.
If you think that your arm or shoulder pain may be coming from your neck, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Chiropractors in our office. We would love to evaluate you and see if Chiropractic care can help your condition.
