CranioSacral Therapy Post-Tongue and Lip Tie Revision: A Success Story

It is recommended by pediatric dentists that after a lip and tongue tie revision CranioSacral Therapy is administered shortly after the surgery. This allows the nervous system to "turn on" and allow muscles to start developing coordination. Baby's start learning to suck in the third trimester, so even if a revision is done soon after birth, a baby may have already developed poor muscle habits that need to be retrained.

Recently I had a two month old patient that came to our office after a lip and tongue tie revision. Before his revision, he was spitting up a lot and had some latch issues. His mother was seeing a lactation consultant and it was found that he had a lip and tongue tie. At the pediatric dentist, he had revisions done on his lip, tongue, and both cheeks. She was very determined to get her baby CranioSacral care soon after the revision. the baby was under care of another pediatric Chiropractor, but she was not trained in CranioSacral Therapy. That is what led them to our office. Both Dr. Baker and I have training in CranioSacral Therapy through the Upledger Institute and have taken the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association class on CranioSacral for infants.

After examining the patient, it was found that he had a lot of restrictions in the cranial bones, upper neck, and pelvic area. I used gentle pressure to correct the restrictions. He was given a few home care recommendations and would be continuing his post-revision stretches and exercises.

He came back in the next week with a few changes. He went from nursing every 2-3 hours all night, to sleeping for eight hours IN A ROW! He was no longer as fussy in his car seat. Breastfeeding was less painful for the mother. His gag reflex was less sensitive. Overall, the patient was doing exceptionally better. He was less tender and fussy during the treatment. He seemed like a much happier baby.
