Common Lower Back Pain Causes and Risk Factors

Low back pain is very common because of the flexible, yet vulnerable, nature of the lumbar spine. The bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, and other tissue in this region are subject to overuse and faster age-related wear and tear. This usually makes it easier to strain the back muscles, herniate the discs, or compress the nerve roots. Pain, swelling, and inflammation may result. A painful condition called sciatica is common from a compressed or inflamed nerve root. Other conditions commonly linked to low back pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Subluxation (vertebral bones are not aligned)

Prolonged sitting or inactivity, lifting heavy objects using the wrong lifting technique, obesity, poor diet, and pregnancy can increase the risk of back pain.

Typical Symptoms

Your pain can be sudden, gradual, sharp stabbing, dull aching, or disabling. It may radiate along the sciatic nerve pathway to the hip, buttock, leg, or foot. You may also feel tingling or numbness in those areas or leg weakness. Stiffness in the back may prevent you from twisting, bending, or walking.

What to Expect

Before treatment, we will evaluate you for injuries and spinal conditions known to cause chronic inflammation or pain. The evaluation will include a physical exam, X-rays, and possibly other imaging tests to make a diagnosis. The goal of treatment will be to eliminate the pain, reduce inflammation, restore nerve function, and improve spinal flexibility.

Our chiropractor achieves these results using the Cox Technique, a hands-on manipulation method for aligning the spinal bones and relieving pain. The manipulative therapy involves flexion-distraction and spinal decompression done simultaneously while the patient lies on the Cox Table.

We also treat lumbar pain caused by a herniated disc or pinched nerve with non-surgical spinal decompression. Our chiropractor will apply motorized traction to the lower spine. This pulls the affected disc back into place and relieves pressure on the nerve.

We provide massage therapy, physiotherapy, and corrective exercises all designed to promote healing and strengthening. Other natural pain management tools include proper nutrition, managing stress, and practicing good posture.
