KW Naturopath shares tips for growing mint

Mint…as functional as it is beautiful,

and foolproof to grow!

Mint is a vigorous perennial.  It will thrive in light soil with good drainage.

Outdoors:  plant 1 or 2 plants or cuttings about 2 feet apart in moist soil.  A light mulch will help keep the soil moist. They should grow to be one or two feet tall.

In the vegetable garden, it helps to plant mint near cabbage and tomatoes.

When not in a container, mint will set out horizontal runners. Unless you block this, it can sprawl several feet in just one year.

In containers, topdress with a thin layer of compost every few months. Containers above ground will need to be protected in cold climates.

Indoors: Same instructions as in outdoor containers.  Be sure to water them regularly to keep soil evenly moist.

Frequent harvesting is the key to keeping mint plants thriving.

For more plants, just put a small stem in a glass of water and watch it root.
