Baseline Testing

WHAT IS BASELINE TESTING?

Concussion testing can either be baseline (before an injury) or post-injury concussion.

Baseline testing is recommended to optimize post-injury concussion care. Baseline testing provides a “benchmark”, allowing the comparison of an individual’s post-injury results to his/her pre-injury baseline. In terms of symptoms and recovery, concussions do not present themselves in a universal pattern. This makes it a challenge to identify a concussion and determine when it has resolved. Therefore, when treating concussions, it is important to provide individualized care.

There is increasing evidence for baseline testing as a tool to monitor recovery and provide an objective measurement for medical clearance. Not only can baseline measurements vary between individuals, but they can also change within the individual. For sports teams, baseline testing would ideally occur during every pre-season.
