Concussions

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that can affect the way your brain functions. Concussions can vary in severity, and a severe concussion can have serious consequences if left untreated. If you have been diagnosed with a concussion, the professionals at Westside Chiropractic Center can help relieve your pain and other associated symptoms.

.

What Causes Concussions?

Concussions occur due to blows to the head. The most common causes of concussions are auto accidents and work injuries. Concussions can also occur during contact sports such as football, hockey, and boxing. Not all concussions are caused by a blow to the head. Violet shaking of the head can also cause concussions.

What Are the Symptoms of a Concussion?

Concussions cause many symptoms. The more severe the concussion, the more symptoms you will experience. In some cases, concussion symptoms can occur immediately after the incident. Other times, it can take hours or even days for the symptoms to appear. The symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Blurry vision
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Seeing stars
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Forgetfulness
  • The trouble with concentration and memory
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Trouble sleeping

How Are Concussions Diagnosed?

Concussions can be diagnosed during a physical exam. They will want to know the details of your injury and the symptoms you are experiencing. They will also perform a neurological exam to evaluate:

  • Vision
  • Strength and sensation
  • Hearing
  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Reflexes

The doctor will also perform a cognitive test to evaluate your memory, concentration, and your ability to recall information. Your doctor will also order an MRI or CT scan to get a good look at your brain to check the severity of your brain injury.

Concussion Treatment

Immediately after the injury, your doctor will advise you to get plenty of physical and mental rest. They will also advise you to have someone with you for the first couple of days. If your symptoms are not subsiding, you should schedule an appointment with a chiropractor. Concussions can impact your cervical spine, which can make the symptoms worse and last longer. A chiropractor can perform an adjustment to realign the cervical spine to relieve your pain and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
