What is a slipped disc (disk)?

slipped disc

A slipped disc (disk), also known as a herniated disc, ruptured disc, or bulging disc, happens when the rubbery cushion disc between the vertebrae pushes out. The name “slipped disc” is actually a misnomer because the disc doesn’t actually slip or slide, rather it bulges out of it’s tough ring exterior leaving it vulnerable.

Once the disc bulges out of it’s protective ring, it causes pain. This pain can be felt in the neck and back.

To prevent a slipped disc, there are several things you can do to keep your spine safe:

  • Use proper lifting techniques. Lift from your legs, not your back. For large, heavy items, 2 or more people should share the workload.
  • Stretch. Proper stretching can help keep your spine healthy.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight can add pressure to the spine.

Dr. Schneider offers treatment for slipped discs, and can provide you with tips and tricks to keep your spine happy and healthy.
